The internet has made life more convenient than ever before. You can enroll in your Medicare plan in just a matter of minutes. No leaving home. No waiting in line. It’s fast and easy, which gives you the benefit of not having to plan your day around a process that ought to take minutes.
How do I go about signing up?
In the past, you would have to schedule an appointment at the nearest Social Security Office. Once you’ve driven there, you’d stand in line – possibly for hours. You could call them on the phone, but with the amount of calls they get, you’ll be spending a long time doing that, too.
But now you have easy access through your computer at home. You can enroll via the official Social Security website. The easiest way is to call us first at 254-918-5444. We will give you a free quote, plus help you sort through the most ideal Medicare plan for you. You can arrange an appointment with us for a consultation directly on our website, too. We can help you navigate the social security website on your path to enrollment as well.
When can I do this?
Medicare enrollment is limited to certain times of year. If you are enrolling for the first time, you have the option of signing up during the Initial Enrollment Period or General Enrollment Period. If you are signing up because you have recently lost your employer-sponsored group health insurance, you may qualify for the Special Enrollment Period if your employer has 20 or more employees.
Initial Enrollment is a one-time opportunity. It includes the month you turn 65, the three months before it, and the three months after it. Aside from Special Enrollment, this is the one time you can enroll without incurring late fees.
General Enrollment is from January 1 to March 31. Late fees apply.
If you are signing up after losing employer coverage, Special Enrollment spans a period of eight months where you can sign up for Medicare without late enrollment penalties.
When does the coverage become effective?
If you signed up in the three months prior to the month you turn 65, your coverage begins the month you turn 65. If you sign up the month you turn 65, your coverage starts two months later. If you sign up during the second or third month after that, your coverage begins three months later.
For General Enrollment, coverage starts July 1.
With Special Enrollment, your Part A coverage retroactively starts six months before the signup, and Part B starts soon after you enroll.
